New next generation AmigaOS4.1 system available SAM460ex

sam460ex_image

It seems Acube have been teasing us all fall and winter for their new upcoming SAM460ex AmigaOS 4.1 compatible motherboard, finally it is available in the usual 4.1/motherboard combination from well known Amiga dealers on the net.

The SAM motherboard now hit GHz speeds as the SAM460ex runs at 1.15GHz, it is also the first Amiga compatible motherboard from ACube systems that has an PCIe slot, which I think is the main selling point of this motherboard.

If you remember the first SAM motherboard it had tiny GFX memory, so with a PCIe slot you can add a Radeon with 256MB memory or more in theory, perfect if you want to run huge resolution Workbench.

ACube states that the version of AmigaOS4.1 is a beta and you will be able to download the stable version of 4.1 once it is released.

Price for the motherboard and AmigaOS4.1 is 750 EUR, with taxes expect that price to hit 900 EUR. A bit expensive yes, but either you are one who pays this much for an 4.1 system or you are not.

Desert Racing of BarDos runs in AmigaOS4.1 and MOS now

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

Desert Racing of BarDos is probably one of the most famous bad games on the Amiga ever if you judge comments on internet forums.

It is a racing game with a reputation of being unplayable, but the game is still selling I guess so that is kinda cool :)

Anyways.. now you can enjoy this fine piece of racing game on your next-gen Amiga. Whoahhh…. Christmas arrived early this year.

Download the demo and find out the truth, is it playable or not?(please comment, I just sold my Peg2/4.1 machine so I can not test :( )

AmigaAMP gets new SAM440 engine

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

SAM440 is the hardware of choice for the next-gen Amiga that have its operating system built on by sources for the original Workbench.

Sam440 is not the most fastest hardware out there but it does a kick ass job because AmigaOS by nature is very lean and responsive.

AmigaAMP is to Amiga what WinAMP is to the Windows world.

So it is with great news we can say that AmigaAMP has been updated with new engine for SAM440 users to fix problems, or as it is said on the relevant hompage “Recompiled with SDK 53.15 to fix problems on SAM platform.”

If your Amiga begins on three letters and ends with three numbers, you should definitely download this archive right now.

amigaos4.com owned by Hyperion?

Friday, November 6th, 2009

Wow, did not see this one comming: Is www.amigaos4.com now owned by Hyperion?

Is it true?

Developer at Hyperion claims AmigaOS4.1 is not ruled out yet for Amiga classic

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

In a shocking post at Amigaworld.net one developer of AmigaOS have confirmed that AmigaOS4.1 is not ruled out for classic PPC Amiga systems.

As you all know, Hyperion surprised the Amiga world with releasing OS4 for classic Amiga running Phase 5 turbo boards back in 2007, since then Amiga fans have been waiting for a confirmation if further development on classic Amiga hardware will continue.

I don’t know what lines you are reading between, but a 4.1 for Classics hasn’t been ruled out yet. It will not happen too soon, most certainly not this year, and it might not happen at all, but the possibility is certainly there. Not, it might not happen at all. It does depend on a number of factors. Factors I can’t go into now.

Find out the shocking news on the future of the commercial AmigaOS known as AmigaOS4.x on Amigaworld.net

What are those factors? We can only speculate about the big mystery in a sea of untold mysteries of the Amiga future held in the corporate headquarters of the new owners of AmigaOS – Hyperion, the developers of post AmigaOS4.+

Development of new PPC boards?

New classic Amiga motherboards?

PPC-PCI plugin cards for PC-workstations?

Go ahead.. shock me!

Rumour, AmigaOS4 goes x86 before year ends

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

I have not got anything better to do than browse through some Amiga sites and forums this Friday. I came across an interesting post on EAB (that is English Amiga Board for those of you who never heard of it, because for every Amiga forum there is a SAB, Swedish Amiga board, FAB, Finish Amiga board, GAB, German Amiga board,,.  you get the idea :-) ).

Post no:18 in this thread of “omg wtf lol Hyparion win” a user with the username of illy5603, yes that is illy5603, not 5602, mentions he was at AmiWest 09 when the groundbreaking news of the trials where released. He also mentions he got the impression that Hyperion guy sent to the show was hiding the fact that Hyperions “most ambitious journey” (I am going to make a tribute page to their “ambitious journey” once it is released, IMHO most memorable Amiga internet myths in recent time) was going to be AmigaOS released for x86 but he refused to let the news slip out.

Nobody is saying AmigaOS is going to x86 so do not take anyone’s word for it, even Hyperion somewhat stated that x86 would mean freezing development of 4.1 and investing lots of cash into what has already been developed for PPC platform. But everyone knows x86 is the future for AmigaOS if the future of AmigaOS is the desktop workstation.

For sure, if the goal is to become a cell phone OS I guess ARM or another embedded chip could be the way to go, but as a hardcore Amiga user I would rather want AmigaOS to be dead than to become a pathetic cell phone OS, either it runs on the desktop or not.

Dynamic icon scaling in AmigaOS4

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

One of the new functions in the update of AmigaOS4.1 to 4.1.1 (guess?) is dynamic icon scaling which means you can adjust size of the icons to suit you. Today, icons can look a bit small on a large monitor so it is nice to be able to ajdust that yourself in the future.

For a glimpse into the future of icon scaling in AmigaOS, check out this image.

OS4 roadmap made by the community

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

I like to make a point in that roadmaps in the Amigaworld are few and far between, something I would like to be changed in the future with new leadership of Amiga.

Anyway, a friendly member of the Amiga community has taken time to create a roadmap out of rumours, facts and information presented at AmiWest09. You can follow the discussion at Amigaworld.net.

We now have enough info from AmiWest & Pianta Amiga to partially construct Hyperion’s roadmap for OS4:

* OS4.1 (final) is already released for Amiga Ones & Pegasos 2. It seems that there may never be a non-beta release for Sam440s…

* OS4.1.1 (final) will be free & available for Amiga Ones, Pegasos 2 & Sam440. Although not yet finished, it is very likely to have:

- A more modern metallic-looking theme, although this may not be the default.

- Much bigger new icons as standard. Looks a bit OS X-ish IMHO.

- Dynamic icon scaling on Workbench! So users with huge monitors won’t be forced to live with small icons, but user with smaller monitors can still have small icons if they wish.

- A pop-up notification system: All applications registered to the application.library can send notifications to the notification server (called Ringhio) that can be configured to display them on the WB screen. Should be used by at least the USB stack & some 3rd-party programs like XNet-RSS.

- Replacement of the WbStartup folder by a StartUp preferences app, so you don’t have to worry about programs in the WbStartup folder becoming out of date. And the loading of programs is accompanied by display of their icons on a bar in the middle of the screen (like in many other OSes).

- Automatic monitor configuration, using DDC (monitor plug’n'play).

- A new shell with support for multiple tabs, scrollbars (with buffer), command history & auto-completion. EDIT: Rigo says this will probably miss OS4.1.1, but will appear in a later minor update.

- A new intuition, with shadows around windows, and extended ReAction.

- More beginner-friendly installer.

- More beginner friendly set-up of OS4, e.g. ContextMenus & ClickToFront running by default.

- Special versions of Tunenet, SimpleMail, and possibly other programs.

- EDIT: 10% faster video playback on Sam440 (at least with DvPlayer), thanks to improved graphics handling.

- A ton of bug fixes, which makes OS4 much more stable, especially on the Sam.

- Better USB support, and especially a lot more stable.

- Support for USB2.0 *might* make it, but this is still in development.

- Workbench automatically updates itself when files change now (this was a past complaint about OS4.1 in an OS News review).

* OS4.2 was revealed by Steven Solie:

- Multi-core (SMP) support! Sounded like this would continue to be developed after OS4.2, presumably because it is such a major change.

- Better USB support (and of course definitely USB2.0 if it doesn’t make it into OS4.1.1).

- A focus on printer support.

- A focus on graphics driver acceleration. i.e. More stuff being hardware accelerated, which fits in with Rogue mentioning elsewhere that Cairo now has hardware support.

- Replacement of the graphics subsystem.

- *Plans* for JAVA support! He did say “for OS4.2 and beyond”, so I guess it may not be fully supported in OS4.2 (if at all), because it would be such a big project.

- There is surely a lot more planned, but it’s currently secret!

Related news:
* It seems that the Most Amitious Project (which is NOT Firefox!) will be announced before the end of this year.

* The Firefox port (Timberwolf) will *hopefully* have an early alpha release made by the end of the year, but this is not a commercial project, so anything could happen. The bounty is already over 3,000 Euros, which Steven Solie said “will really help things along” :)

* Hyperion’s settlement with Amiga Inc (both of them & other related parties) was due to mediation that started 28th November 2008. There were in fact several lawsuits (by the different parties), not just the one that was publically followed.

* It will take time for the judges in all of the court cases to be updated on the settlement (and presumably officially close those court cases).

* The number of developers working on OS4 has varied between about 10 & 30. It is currently “in the high teens”, so over 15.

Wow… dual core support in AmigaOS, Amiga f”k yeah!!

Picture of Timberwolf running on AmigaOS4.1

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Timberworlf is the name of Firefox for Amiga which is currently ported by the Friedens brothers for AmigaOS4.1.

An image of Timberwolf running on AmigaOS4.1 has today been released and as we can see, the browser renders the fairly generic page as it should look like (I think).

Its great too see the Firefox GUI running on AmigaOS and while OWB is currently the defacto standard for browsing on next-gen AmigaOS maybe Timberwolf will change that in the future?

Find out more about Timberwolf on Amigabounty.net.
