Norton Commander for your Amiga on AmiNET

Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

ntp-amiga-norton-commander

If you are a computer user from the 80′ies and early 90′ies I think you have most probably heard about Norton/Symantecs fabulous file manager for MS-DOS: Norton Commander.

Back when I was young, everyone who had a 386 or 486 ran Norton Commander or NC for short when dealing with files in MS-DOS.

NTP is an inofficial Amiga version of Norton Commander, there is rumour Symantec did not like this almost 100% clone of NC on the Amiga.

Now, most of you probably say this is stupid program and it is old school etc, give me DOpus any day etc. But if you used NC back in the day you will be jumping with joy that the keyboard shortcuts are mostly the same in Amiga NTP, amazing. Yes, press F10 for quit, F5 for copy, you do not have to relearn your filemanager.

Recently NTP have been made freely available and the code have been released so we are all waiting for MorphOS/OS4/68k ports and refinements.

While we wait, be sure to download latest updated Norton Commander for your Amiga from AmiNET!

Desert Racing of BarDos runs in AmigaOS4.1 and MOS now

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

Desert Racing of BarDos is probably one of the most famous bad games on the Amiga ever if you judge comments on internet forums.

It is a racing game with a reputation of being unplayable, but the game is still selling I guess so that is kinda cool :)

Anyways.. now you can enjoy this fine piece of racing game on your next-gen Amiga. Whoahhh…. Christmas arrived early this year.

Download the demo and find out the truth, is it playable or not?(please comment, I just sold my Peg2/4.1 machine so I can not test :( )

AmigaAMP gets new SAM440 engine

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

SAM440 is the hardware of choice for the next-gen Amiga that have its operating system built on by sources for the original Workbench.

Sam440 is not the most fastest hardware out there but it does a kick ass job because AmigaOS by nature is very lean and responsive.

AmigaAMP is to Amiga what WinAMP is to the Windows world.

So it is with great news we can say that AmigaAMP has been updated with new engine for SAM440 users to fix problems, or as it is said on the relevant hompage “Recompiled with SDK 53.15 to fix problems on SAM platform.”

If your Amiga begins on three letters and ends with three numbers, you should definitely download this archive right now.

New software releases by OnyxSoft

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

OnyxSoft is a cool Swedish based developer house pumping out crazy little apps for any kind of “Amiga” in the Amiga-world. It is always refreshing to see someone just creating without boundaries in the world of Amiga so filled up with wars of color clashes.

Check out their site, loots of goodies there to try out on your Amiga!

To bad I just sold my Pegasos 2 with AmigaOS4.1, it would be quite interesting to see if AmiVNC4 ran any faster than before, but thats just the way life goes, I hope of an AROS version instead :)

Updated programs
AmiVNC4 v2.2.0. – (OS4) VNC server.
Added Zlib support which should speed up transfers a lot on slow networks. Now startable from WB with tooltypes. Should use less CPU and be more responsive when detecting a screen change.

BackUp v1.70 – (68k) Backup program that mirrors a directory structure.
Added an option so that you can select that files over a given size should not be copied. Added two options to prevent the setting of Amiga protection bits and Amiga file comments. Fixed a few minor bugs.

MPlayer-GUI v1.46 – (OS4) GUI for MPlayer.
It is now possible to start MPlayer-GUI with arguments from CLI or WB and files will be added to the GUI that is already opened. Added a Stop button. Added #?.flv to the default file pattern.

MultiRen v1.69 – (68k) Powerful multi-file renaming tool using MUI. Has plugin-support for MP3-renaming and more.
Fixed drag’n'drop of directories in Ambient. Added some stack to prevent crashes when opening the MUI settings on PPC systems. Minor fixes..

JoinSplitter v1.4 – (68k) Split and join files with a GUI.
It is possible to have joined files automatically deleted after being joined. Better handling of large files over 2GB, and joining of files that will result in more than 4GB.

UTF-8 v1.2 – (68k) This program lets you type UTF-8 text everywhere (like in web browser forms for example).
UTF-8 is now a commodity if started from Workbench. From Workbench it also reads a few tooltypes.

AmiZilla Booty ended by former Netscape executive

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

For quite some time now an ongoing bounty for porting Mozilla to Amiga have been going on, today shocking Amiga news tells us no more. Read below to find out the info.

Sad information, I know the first time I read about AmiZilla was back in 98 or 99, it is quite amazing nothing good really came out of it considering how Amigans are by nature, but I guess at least it gave some hope back in the dark days of 00-01 when the future where shady.

Chicago, Illinois November 19th, 2009

For Immediate Release

It’s with great sadness that we must announce the end of the AmiZilla Booty. The former Netscape Executive has been concerned with the length of the contest for some time and now no longer wishes to participant. Listed below is a statement in his own words about why the contest is over.

“Today I wish to end the AmiZilla Contest, this project has gone on way too long with no project updates from any coders that might have been involved. Some that never even donated to the contest have tried to use it to cast DiscreetFX and myself in a bad light. Rumors were spread that the funds were being used for other things. I take this as a personal insult myself since I am in control of the funds and am of high ethical character. AmiZilla was always about helping the Amiga, AROS & MorphOS community get a modern browser. It was a contest though and without a clear winner the contest was not helping it’s sponsors, mainly DiscreetFX and myself.

Many times I was going to increase my contribution to the bounty considerably but I did not because of rumor spreading and in-fighting. I advise everyone in the Amiga community to do more and talk less in the future. I officially withdraw my AmiZilla funds and hopefully make the Amiga community wiser for it. Actions speak louder than words, this is my action. I do see a light at the end of the tunnel though. The developers of Amiga OS 4.1 have taken it upon themselves to actually do the hard work of porting Firefox to AmigaOS. They would have made the programming team from Netscape proud.”

That’s the end of his statement. He did say the CD is maturing and all the funds minus his contribution will be transferred back to DiscreetFX. Listed below are the options that those that donated have.

1. Transfer your donation to Timberwolf to help that Firefox bounty succeed.

2. Request a refund and have it processed through our accounting department. Your donation was always safe with DiscreetFX. We have never done any type of coupon scams or anything else unethical in the history of the company.

3. Transfer donation to Open Video Toaster. This effort to bring video editing and effects to Amiga OS 4.x, AROS and MorphOS is in need of more donations to make it thrive. AmigaOS, MorphOS & AROS have no video editing applications anywhere near the quality of the Amiga Video Toaster. What they do have is the rare opportunity of the complete source code to this classic best selling system. Use that opportunity wisely!

4. Receive the equivalent of your donation in DFX products.

5. Request your donation goes to Charity Water. Many people in the world are suffering because they don’t have clean water. Help them by transferring your AmiZilla Booty donation to this great charity.

Sorry for the bad news but AmiZilla’s key backer has spoken.

Best regards

DiscreetFX Team

New package for Amiga WHDLoad harddrive installer for classic Amiga games

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

Once upon a time WHDLoad was the answer to every Amiga fan of old school gaming.

The promise: play any Amiga game harddrive installed on any Amiga with the right hardware requirements, so that meant you could enjoy fixed old school Amiga games such as Buggy Boy and craptastic games such as Shadow of the Beast on your ge-pimped unt über 060 based Amiga that was so tricked out you had to boot with no startup-sequence just to run screenmodes in prefs.

Since the reality always differs a bit from the dream the scenario above is off course not 100% right. But WHDLoad is still maintained and just recently a couple of updates where posted:

  • 04.11.2009 fixed: Eksperyment Delfin (MarkSoft) savegame name fixed (Info)
  • 03.11.2009 new: Mentor (MarkSoft) done by Psygore (Info)

  • 20.10.2009 new: Time and magik (Level 9 & Mandarin) done by Psygore (Info)

    WookieChat: v2.12 beta 9 released

    Thursday, November 5th, 2009

WookieChat is that Amiga IRC-client with the Wookie in the icon. Let us hope George Lucas do not find that one out, or maybe he is an old school Amiga fan with a renderfarm built of SAM-Flex mobos?

We will never find out the truth but if you are still playing around on IRC like it is 1999 again I suggest you get the latest WookieChat right now!

    Have fun.

AmiTwitter – new Twitter client for AmigaOS looking for Alpha testers

To wet your appetite, why not tease you with a screenshot to?

Picture of Timberwolf running on AmigaOS4.1

    Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Timberworlf is the name of Firefox for Amiga which is currently ported by the Friedens brothers for AmigaOS4.1.

An image of Timberwolf running on AmigaOS4.1 has today been released and as we can see, the browser renders the fairly generic page as it should look like (I think).

Its great too see the Firefox GUI running on AmigaOS and while OWB is currently the defacto standard for browsing on next-gen AmigaOS maybe Timberwolf will change that in the future?

Find out more about Timberwolf on Amigabounty.net.
